Fragment of a Letter, August

…impelled to write a love poem:

I traced the horizon without you, my dear,
and found in the act an unnerving element
of dread. I fear

that my head is the center and projector
of the circle, which implies an impediment
to my surpassing it as a mere introspector.

Therefore, my love, when you draw near,
please take a piece of me in your benevolent
hands, and travel far away from here

(somewhere gladly beyond the pale spectre
of my imagination—beyond the prevalent
geometries) to construct, from me, a vector.

That is to ask, my darling, if you would carry me in your heart, so that our love might shatter the sky…
